The Dark Prince: The Original Short story
stare into the darkness too long and it will begin to stare back.
After his wife dies, Ethan is content to whither away in his grief, depression, and self loathing in the darkness. Until one day, a beautiful and familiar stranger appears like a long lost friend. But as time passes, Ethan begins to realize this stranger is not who he seems. What he seems. Is Ethan losing his mind? Or does this stranger have a strange hold over him that he can not escape? Ethan must make a choice before the darkness surrounding him swallows him whole.
Writer’s Statement
The Dark Prince arrived at at time in my life where my mindset was much in the same place as the main character Ethan’s. Due to the deeply personal nature of this story, it took me several years to release it despite it being a story that came to me easier than most. I had been through a very difficult time in my life and this story was born of that pain, anger, and grief. The Dark Prince is a story that highlights the relationships we have with our personal demons and shadow self. It highlights the relationship with grief, depression, pain and self loathing as well as how people can get stuck in that mindset. It can be difficult to leave this place in our lives due to its over familiarity or even, sometimes, false sense of comfort. I have a strange love for the Prince in this story as he is a personification of the darker side of humanity. Just be careful how much you let him in as he may not leave as easily as he came.
